Knowledge Fight Wiki:Wiki rules

From Knowledge Fight Wiki

Below is the set of rules that we as admins expect all users and contributions to follow. Please read them before contributing anything.

While we've tried to justify rules that may not be intuitive, the rules are final and non-negotiable. Any changes to the rules will come because of discussions between admins.

We stand on the shoulders of giants. Our rules are based on the rules of other similar communities, and we are thankful for all the work that went into formulating and refining them. We hope that other communities will be able to make use of our variant.

It's a Family Show (Keep it civil)

  • Do not make personal attacks on other people.
  • If you need to criticize another user’s argument, do so without attacking them as a person.
  • Do not use bigoted language, including slurs that degrade another person or group of people based on gender, race, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, etc.
  • No transphobic or fatphobic comments or posts about anyone. That includes Alex and other subjects of the podcast.

Documenting Bigotry, Hate, and Violence without Supporting It

Because of the subject matter of the podcast, it is not possible to avoid discussing hard topics. InfoWars routinely produces hateful and bigoted content, and it would do a disservice to fail to recognize that by sanitizing it. With that in mind, please consider the following guidelines when writing about bigotry purveyed by Alex and others.

  • Be unequivocal that bigotry is wrong and does not represent the views of users of this wiki.
  • Be clear about who is making the statement.
  • Stay factual. Avoid sarcasm, jokes, or exaggeration (These represent valid coping mechanisms, but in this medium, they can muddy the waters about who is saying what.).
  • If a page discusses bigoted topics in-depth, place a notice upfront so readers are informed in advance.

We also would suggest considering if expanding bigoted claims is the best way to constructively draw attention to them in each particular context. Here are some tools to consider as alternatives:

  • Reference external and authoritative resources on the topic. For example, when discussing antisemitism, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has excellent resources that can be summarized and linked to[1].
  • Link to existing internal resources rather than repeating common bigoted tropes. For instance, if someone is a PEZ Dispenser, just say that rather than repeating Blood libel.
  • An example we hope conveys these principles while still discussing a hard topic is our page on The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Another with a different approach is our stub on The Sandy Hook Elementary Massacre.

Leave Alex’s family (including his ex-wife) out of it

We follow the lead of Dan in discussing figures in Alex's private life. In general, don't do it.

ONLY the facts covered in the Podcast are allowed

For instance, because Rex Jones has appeared on InfoWars airwaves and been covered on the podcast, it is allowable to have a stub for him.

It is not appropriate, however, to include any details that were not discussed on the show. When in doubt, leave it out.

Exception for the Sandy Hook Defamation Trials and similar Legal Proceedings

It is acceptable to cover publicly available information about Alex's / InfoWars' legal difficulties as they relate to show topics. This does NOT extend to things like custody cases primarily concerning his personal life.

When documenting topics such as the Laffery v. Jones trial, please keep the following in mind:

  • Do not create pages for the victims/plaintiffs, or record information about the plaintiffs that is not absolutely necessary to contextualize the broader subject. These people have been through enough. Let's be extremely cautious about anything that might direct further harassment their way (see the rule about linking below).
  • Keep the content on the wiki high level and useful for users looking back. There are other places to record a blow-by-blow of the trial. Everything written here should be useful context for someone reading the page in 6 months.

Don't Link the Discord, and be cautious about linking Facebook, Reddit and other Knowledge Fight communities

There is an Unofficial Knowledge Fight Discord. They have been clear that they do not want to be linked to. Do not link to or cite them, it will be removed and you may be banned.

InfoWars cultivates an online following of trolls and idiots. Most of these people are blowhards, but some are dangerous and the aggregate effect is very scary and harmful. InfoWars has a history of sending its audience to harass and scare their critics. Knowledge Fight and the communities around it are not immune, and we have to operate accordingly.

In general, consider the exposure that linking to a source may provide. This wiki is public and indexed. Someone from InfoWars may come across it and try to use information from it for their own purposes. Let's make sure that if that ever happens, InfoWars isn't dumping harassment on other Knowledge Fight Fans because of us[2].

If you want to cite a post (or even credit a user) from Reddit, or another public / publicly indexed community:

  • Ask permission from the original poster.
  • Ensure that the community does not have rules against cross-posting.
  • Consider if citing content this way significantly raises its exposure, and strongly prefer alternatives if it does.

To reiterate, the Discord in particular has already made their stance on this clear. Do not link to them.

Be a productive member of the wiki

  • Need help? Ask an administrator!
  • Contribute to the wiki in line with the established processes and conventions.
  • Disrupting the wiki with “edit warring” over differing opinions of a topic with another user or group of users is not productive.

Stay on Topic

The subjects covered on the podcast are just one part of a wide world.

While we want to provide people with a way to dig a little deeper into some topics (e.g. Alex's Legal Troubles), we are primarily trying to document what is covered on the show.

There may be reasonable disagreements over what is sufficiently related to the show. In such cases, the determination of an Admin is final.

We would encourage users who feel that they have a valuable contribution deemed to be off-topic to contribute that to another community. In many cases, an edit to Wikipedia or RationalWiki may be the right place.

Do not engage in excessive self-promotion

The wiki is a collaborative community resource for the topic at hand. It is NOT a free place to advertise your related website, YouTube channel, blog, social media account, etc.

Have a question about whether your link would be welcome? Ask an administrator!

Do not harass other users

If somebody asks you to stop posting certain content on their wall, respect their wishes. It is their wall.

Do follow community guidelines for formatting

When a community has established formatting, it’s important to adhere to that.

We use a bot (User:RainbowBatch) to format and aggregate structured information across the wiki.

RainbowBatch can handle user edits that match the existing format, but anything that breaks the formatting will mean that a human (probably User:CelestAI) will have to get involved.

If you want to make sweeping changes to the formatting, reach out to Admins to talk about it. We're open to improvements, but it'll probably involve coordinating the change with the bot.

  2. I (User:CelestAI) have badly screwed this up in the past, and I want to acknowledge that I didn't always follow these principals and people got hurt. Please don't repeat my mistakes. I'm making this rule as clear as possible in the hopes that nobody else has to get hurt by actions like mine.
